Studies in chronic liver toxicity induced by repeated administration of carbon tetrachloride, heavy metals, thioacetamide, alcohol and several drugs, including azathioprine and indometacin, have also demonstrated that administration of silymarin and silybin (the active constituents of Milk Thistle) protects against damage. Other studies have reported protective effects of silymarin against liver injury induced by ischaemia and gamma irradiation.
